Billie Eilish - LUNCH | Bass Synth Patch Remake

Remaking the bass synth from the 2019 song "LUNCH" by Billie Eilish can be an exciting challenge for any synthesizer enthusiast. Here’s how you can create the "LUNCH" bass patch and play this iconic sound on most hardware or software subtractive synthesizers (Serum, Vital, Pigments, Prophet, Korg, Moog, etc). We've included the preset download directly for your convenience, but we strongly recommend you use our programming tutorial to recreate it yourself.

Original Audio

Billie Eilish’s track “Lunch” showcases an aggressive and dynamic bass synthesizer that contributes to the song’s ominous, moody aesthetic. The distorted, swelling bassline is a defining feature, characterized by its gritty texture and evolving dynamics that amplify the tension in the track. This sound is likely created using layered distortion effects and dynamic filter modulation to achieve its pulsing intensity. You can hear the bassline prominently at 2:25 in the song.

Our Remake of The Bass Synth

This audio clip is how close we've matched the original tone of the bass synth from the song "LUNCH" by Billie Eilish, giving you a reference point as you design your own synthesizer preset. Play it as often as you need to familiarize yourself with the nuances of the sound.

Synth Patch Programming Recipe

Getting Started

  • Start by initializing your synthesizer to a plain saw with no filter, modulation or effects. For soft synths use the "init"/"default" preset or the the button to reset all parameters to their default factory values.
  • No two synths are exactly alike, so treat the values below as approximate, and use your ear.
  • Percentage values (e.g. 50%) represent the relative position of a knob or slider within its full range. The full range of each parameter may differ from synth to synth, so use your ear.

Oscillators

  • Oscillator 1 Waveform: Medium Pulse
  • Oscillator 2 Waveform: Medium Pulse
  • Oscillator 2 Pitch: Once octave below
  • Oscillator 1 and 2 Unison: 4 voices, Mild detune
  • Oscillator 3 Waveform: Triangle
  • Oscillator Mix: Osc 3 louder than the others to create a sub bass low end
  • Oscillator Routing: Only send Osc 1 and 2 through filter and effects. Osc 3 should be a pure triangle sound

Filter

  • Type: Low Pass 24 dB
  • Cutoff: Mid-range
  • Resonance: Low-Mid Range

LFO

  • LFO 1 Waveform: Triangle
  • LFO 1 Destination: Filter Cutoff
  • LFO 1 Amount: 20%
  • LFO 1 Rate: Pretty slow
  • LFO 2 Waveform: Triangle
  • LFO 2 Destination: Filter Resonance
  • LFO 2 Amount: 30%
  • LFO 2 Rate: A little faster than LFO 1
  • LFO 3 Waveform: Upward Saw
  • LFO 3 Destination: Volume (turn it all the way down to let the LFO control it)
  • LFO 3 Amount: 75%
  • LFO 3 Rate: 1/4 note

Distortion

  • Type: Overdrive
  • Amount: A fair amount that will break up as the volume of the synth reaches it’s peak

Note: the patch settings may slightly differ in the Syntorial challenge.
