In reply to: When I Wake Up (hunter & wolfe): Tapey sound?
September 1, 2023 at 10:15 am #54537got it! i’ll try that. it’s prob not a synth but just trying to approximate the sound. how about for the other two sounds i linked above? any thoughts would be helpful.

September 1, 2023 at 9:19 am #54532I don’t hear a synth melody playing the same line as the guitar. I do hear a really quiet little keyboard or synth melody playing a different melody in the background. Is that what you’re referring to?
yes! sorry, by “playing along,” i meant playing at the same time as the guitar. but no, it’s not the same line, as you noticed!

August 31, 2023 at 10:16 pm #54525Thanks Joe! See attached.
The sound attached here just sounds too…”synthy” (really can’t find a better word to describe it) compared to the sound at the beginning of Whe I Wake Up.
That same sorta sound is also used in these songs: https://open.spotify.com/track/48vfrSZyzsEpKDdUrT1P28?si=794ea7b738c54e33 (2:10) and https://open.spotify.com/track/4F6WHoPxRNpJO9RYjHpSJN?si=1df1985efa974e78 (0:37).
It would be great if you could give me pointers on those two as well. I’m gearing up for some live performances!

In reply to: Programming a Bass Clarinet?
March 26, 2022 at 3:29 pm #47492Attached above is my latest attempt at a patch on Serum. I don’t think it sounds terrible in the lower registers (though it could be improved) but it’s def more cheesy in the higher registers.
Also, when you compare to a real bass clarinet, I feel defeated haha https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pAdLMSGpbY&ab_channel=MarceloMaldonado

In reply to: Tips for Making Vibrato Leads That Don’t Sound Goofy?
March 11, 2022 at 9:57 am #47349Congrats on finishing Syntorial!
1. Typically triangle or sine. Sine may be a better choice for a more natural sounding vibrato as the Triangle has a slightly more abrupt U-turn at the top and bottom.
2. I don’t think it’s a simple as choosing the right waveform. Rather it’s your whole sound that matters. I think any raw waveform will sound kind of corny with vibrato. So it’s more about what you do with that waveform that matters. Like…
3. Portamento. That’s a good idea. Adding additional bends between notes could make it more natural.
4. It’s kind of redundant. I never use it. I remember mentioning it somewhere in the Serum Lesson Pack but can’t off the top of my head think of the use I demonstrated. If you don’t need it, don’t use it.
Can you post an example of what you’ve made so far? It may not be your vibrato settings, but the tone you’re working with. Like you said, those two examples are actual vocals, versus your synth.
Thanks Joe! See the link to download my current patch (built on Massive). It doesn’t sound great I know; I was trying to match the sound in that Radiohead song I linked above.

In reply to: Start with interactive tutorials or Massive Lesson Pack?
February 23, 2022 at 11:11 pm #47207definitely finish the tutorial lesson and then do the massive lesson for that module, then go down the list that way.
the massive lesson pack goes into how to find the same functionality from the tutorials within massive, but it doesn’t re-cover the underlying concepts from the tutorials.
so i’d go through the module first, skip the last one (“on your own”), and do the massive lesson at the end of that module, rinse, repeat.
In reply to: Oscillator Sync/FM/Ring Mod: I don’t get it
February 20, 2022 at 10:25 am #47168Apologies for the double-post (I can’t figure out how to edit posts): A good example is the “FM Bass” patch as part of the Section 22 Serum lessons. If you hadn’t told me that was FM synthesis, I would never have guessed it. I would’ve just went with a Sine wave and maybe a sub-oscillator.
In reply to: Question on Unisons/Voices (Section 14 of Syntorial)
January 26, 2022 at 5:25 pm #46925Thanks Joe!
Sorry, but can you elaborate on what a “voice” is? I’m not sure what you mean when you say “oscillator within each unison voice.”
Shouldn’t the sound at least be louder because the unison is copying each oscillator?

January 15, 2022 at 5:30 pm #46724bump! i might not have gotten far enough in syntorial to program this crash yet but any assistance would be VERY helpful. all other synth tracks are done ^_^
In reply to: How Difficult Are These Synth Sounds? (FF7 Remake Content)
January 11, 2022 at 12:38 am #46627great! yeah, i go through each lesson and then do the massive, serum, and sylenth1 add-ons (might as well do them all in one go). it’s been great so far and relatively smooth.
switching topics, what new features do you have planned for syntorial and when do you think you’ll roll them out?
