I’m currently using Surge (free) for my “On Your Own” exercises, and I’m wondering if it’s too complex to start out with? I’m starting to figure out how things are mapped from Syntorial’s synth to Surge, but it’s not always a clean mapping and I’m not entirely sure if the assumptions I end up making are correct. I’m wondering if anyone has any mappings from Primer (Syntorial’s built-in synth) to Surge, or if perhaps I should start with something more simple? If you think I should start with something more simple, any thoughts on a good free synth to start with? Oh, and I also have NI Komplete, so if any of those included synths will work, I have those available. Thanks!

Update: I found a blog post on this site that addresses this question, so I think I’ll try Synth1. Additional suggestions are welcome.

Synth1 is a good choice. Another one I like is TAL-Noisemaker
