Would love some help honing in on the tone for these sounds, the lead motifs.
I recreated the chord pad to my satisfaction with Arturia’s Korg MS-20, could share in the comments too.
Thinking of trying this out with the new MicroKorg VST as DC used it a lot.
Anything is really well appreciated!
January 6, 2023 at 9:48 am #51383Are you referring to the bells at the very beginning, or the lead that comes in around 0:38?
January 6, 2023 at 9:52 am #51385Ah shoulda been more clear, the lead at 0:38!
January 6, 2023 at 10:16 am #51387Try this:
Osc 1: Sine wave
Osc 2: Saw wave. Raise pitch up 19 semitones.
Osc Levels: ABout 50/50.
Amp Envelope: Make a quick swell with a medium-fast Attack (400ms), medium Decay (~1900ms), 0 Sustain, and medium-fast Release (~300 ms)
Filter: Low Pass, 24 dB. Set Cutoff to a little above middle, and give the Res a modest boost. Also enable key tracking so that when the lead is played in the higher register it’s brighter. Then modulate cutoff with…
Filter Envelope: Create a “wah” with a medium-fast Attack (~400ms), and Decay/Release (~700ms) and 0 Sustain. Approximate the modulation amount to get that wah effect. But you’ll need to tweak the Filter and Envelope settings after you add…
Distortion: Add enough to create some saturation and a bit of growl, but not so much that it’s fully consumed by it. And once you dial this in you’ll probably have to go back and forth between the filter and distortion settings until you get it right.
Voice Mode: Legato. This way when you play the little 5-note run, the envelopes continue moving over the 5 notes.

January 7, 2023 at 12:32 pm #51415Cool thanks, I’ve started on it but haven’t nailed it….What do you think of the higher metallic sounding overtones right around 0:57? Might they be layered on top? Sounds like the same higher patch is auxed into a verb overtop the first go round too.
One more thing, what do you think of the pads at 0:49? I haven’t been able to nail those yet either although did get the ones done in the lower registers.

I definitely think it’s reverb. It may just simply be slapped on the original patch and the type of reverb is achieving that grainy metallic tone.

That pad is tough. Post what you have so far and i’ll take a listen.

January 21, 2023 at 2:50 pm #51651I tried once more and really didn’t come up with anything good – Used MicroKorg at first but it doesn’t have a legato setting for the envelope, and the tone is just very challenging.
For anyone interested, here are my results for the pads and snapshots of the patches. I’m quite happy with the thicker sounding ones.
For this more metallic higher pad layered with the motif, I got somewhere but not all the way. MicroKorg has some belly type wavetables I tried out.

They’re normalized so maybe a bit loud.
